The Story of “Gotthard Massiv”
High in the Swiss Alps, the Gotthard Pass stands like a fortress of stone, crowned with snow and shaped by centuries of wind and water. Streams cascade down its slopes, feeding rivers that run through all of Switzerland, earning it the title of the nation’s “beating heart.” For centuries, travellers, merchants, and pilgrims have crossed this pass, connecting the north and south, uniting cultures, and shaping the country’s identity.
With dramatic orchestral layers and explosive energy, Why War delivers a call for humanity to step back from violence and choose compassion, healing, and understanding instead. The song’s emotional depth and cinematic sound create a moving experience designed to inspire change and unity through music.
For the first time in Swiss music history, the ancient voice of the alphorn—an instrument once used to communicate across valleys—has been integrated into a modern cinematic rock anthem. Played by Peter Baumann, one of Switzerland’s most esteemed alphorn masters, its haunting tones echo like calling signals through the mountains, resonating with both tradition and innovation.

Baumann remembers the recording vividly:
“When I played those first notes, I imagined shepherds from centuries ago sending their voices across the peaks. To hear the alphorn lifted into a new, cinematic world — that gave me goosebumps.”
Alongside the alphorn, Astral Rocks’ sweeping arrangements and orchestral textures create a soundscape as expansive as the landscape itself. Ian Hardwick’s soaring vocals rise like avalanches breaking free, while producer Bradon John Grobler’s orchestrations interlace strength and tenderness into every note.
The song doesn’t just describe the Gotthard — it embodies it. From the heartbeat-like piano at its opening to the flowing melodies that evoke mountain streams, Gotthard Massiv takes the listener on a journey of resilience, connection, and awe.

“This piece is more than just music,” says Milli. “It’s a dialogue between past and present, mountains and people, tradition and innovation. The Gotthard has always been the heart of Switzerland, and now it has its own heartbeat in music.”
By blending Swiss heritage with contemporary cinematic rock, Gotthard Massiv creates not only a tribute to the Alps but also a universally resonant anthem. It tells a story of a mountain that has shaped a nation — and now, through music, reaches out to the world.
